A Trench… But Make It a Cape!

Saying I’m obsessed with capes might still be an understatement. I practically live in my black wool cape all winter and absolutely love it. So naturally, when I started searching for a trench-style cape, I assumed it would be easy to find. Turns out, not so much. Burberry had a nice version, but it was short, single-breasted, and just not quite what I was looking for.

Rather than settle, I decided to make my own! I signed up for a sewing class in mid-January, and since there wasn’t a cape-making course (shocking, I know!), I started with a skirt, then a dress as part of the group. Once I got the basics down, I moved into the advanced class to work on my own projects—and that’s when the cape came to life!

I designed it exactly how I wanted:
✔️ Chose the perfect fabric
✔️ Made it double-breasted
✔️ Added a front gun flap and back flap
✔️ Picked the ideal length

It took countless hours, but I’m beyond thrilled with how it turned out. I know this piece will get a ton of wear… once the weather cools down a bit. There are a few tweaks I’ll make next time, but overall, I couldn’t be happier with my first trench-cape creation.

I originally planned for this to be a DIY post, but I completely failed at documenting the process—I didn’t take a single picture! Next cape, I promise. 😊
